Soldiers' Lives through History - The Ancient World (Soldiers' Lives through History)
Greenwood Press | 2006-11-30 | ISBN: 0313333483 | 328 pages | PDF | 1,5MB

Once warfare became established in ancient civilizations, it's hard to find any other social institution that developed as quickly. In less than a thousand years, humans brought forth the sword, sling, dagger, mace, bronze and copper weapons, and fortified towns. The next thousand years saw the emergence of iron weapons, the chariot, the standing professional army, military academies, general staffs, military training, permanent arms industries, written texts on tactics, military procurement, logistics systems, conscription, and military pay. By 2,000 B.C.E., war was an important institution in almost all major cultures of the world. This book shows readers how soldiers were recruited, outfitted, how they fought, and how they were cared for when injured or when they died. It covers soldiers in major civilizations from about 4000 B.C.E. to about 450 C.E. Soldiers' Lives through History; The Ancient World is divided into two parts, the first addressing military life and the second the ancient armies themselves. "Military Life" presents twenty-one chapters, on significant aspects of military life in the ancient world.

Laws of Armed Conflicts: A Collection of Conventions, Resolutions & Other Documents

Dietrich Schindler, Jiri Toman "Laws of Armed Conflicts: A Collection of Conventions, Resolutions & Other Documents"
Brill Academic Publishers | Pages:1493 | 2004-06 | ISBN: 9004138188 | PDF | 5 Mb

The current decade has been characterized by a resurgence of interest in the law of public international organizations. This fourth, revised edition of International Institutional Law covers the most recent developments in the field. Although public international organizations such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Union have broadly diverging objectives, powers, fields of activity and numbers of member states, they share a wide variety of institutional problems. In this study, the law of individual organizations is not described separately. Instead the book offers a comparative analysis of the institutional law of international organizations. It includes comparative chapters on the rules and practices concerning, for example, membership, decision-making, financing, legal order, supervision and sanctions, legal status and external relations. The book has been designed to appeal to both academics and practitioners.

Monte Cassino: The Story of the Most Controversial Battle of World War II

Monte Cassino: The Story of the Most Controversial Battle of World War II
Da Capo Press (2002-05) | ISBN 0306811219 | 320 Pages | PDF | 3 Mb

Monte Cassino opens in the cold Italian winter of 1943–44. Germany would lose the war, but they still held much of Italy, leaving the Allies to fight their way north to capture Rome—a route no army had taken since Hannibal traversed the Alps to avoid it. And overlooking the only possible passage stood the ancient Abbey of Monte Cassino. The ultimate decision to bomb Monte Cassino was one of the most controversial—and tragic—events of World War II. The combat that followed was just as tragic: Soldiers from more than a dozen nations fought through that savage winter in a ferocious battle that allowed no advance or retreat. Here Hapgood and Richardson examine the military operations and political machinations that led inexorably to the bombing, explore the personalities of all involved, and in a new afterword reflect on its lingering consequences. This is an epic tale of men—and monks—at war.

Linebacker: The Untold Story of the Air Raids Over North Vietnam
Ballantine Books (1989-09-30) | ISBN 0804103747 | 273 Pages | PDF | 5 Mb

This inspiring view of the Linebacker campaign has prompted me to do more research in this study. However after looking for more literature, none had the detail and accuracy as this title. Lt Col Eschmann's military experience and first hand view of these times give him worthy credibility. I strongly recommend to anyone wanting to know more on this historical subject concerning our conflict in Vietnam.

Focusing on portrayals of Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany, and Stalin's Russia in U.S. films, magazine and newspaper articles, books, plays, speeches, and other texts, Benjamin Alpers traces changing American understandings of dictatorship from the late 1920s through the early years of the Cold War.
